Between May 1998 and October 2001, Internet2 worked to specify and deploy the QBone Premium Service (QPS), an interdomain virtual leased-line IP service built on diff-serv forwarding primitives. QPS was very nearly fully specified by the Draft QBone Architecture (v1.0) and was even demonstrated, but was never successfully deployed operationally.
The charter of this design team is to bring closure to the QBone Premium Service effort by documenting the reasons that QPS failed to deploy and by documenting our best understanding of how the architecture should be rounded out. Bringing closure to the architecture will include a review of all outstanding issues, including: the provisioning and matching of policers and shapers across interdomain boundaries to support micro-flow aggregation, the calculation of worst-case jitter bounds, service verification, and signaling, including an assessment of the recommendations of the QBone Signaling Design Team.
Finally, this group will monitor the progress of the Premium IP work being carried out by the European TF-NGN task force. TF-NGN and Internet2 have agreed in principle to form a joint working group to coordinate Premium service specifications and deployments. The instantiation of this joint working group is a linkage between the qbone-arch-dt@internet2.edu and premiumip@dante.org.uk mailing lists.
