To manage congested access circuits, some Internet2 members have
turned to special purpose middleboxes that are often deployed at the
campus edge. Related to firewalls, these "QoS appliances" support a
range of functionality, including: application classification, DSCP
marking, shaping, differentiated queuing, and TCP window size
spoofing.
To date, the QoS working group has not addressed the implications or
capabilities of these devices. To begin to do so, participants in the
working group have organized a plenary session for the NLANR/Internet2 Techs Workshop to be held Monday, January 28, 2002.
This session will include a survey and taxonomy of QoS appliance
capabilities, several experience talks from campus network operators,
"pro" and "con" outrageous opinion talks, and a brief panel
discussion.
An open follow-up meeting of the Internet2 QoS working group will be
held at 8pm at the Holiday Inn the following evening to discuss
next-steps.
Addendum (February 8th, 2002): Final slides in PDF and raw notes
from the WG follow-up meeting are available. |
